The Joint Research Safety Initiative (JRSI) at UChicago successfully hosted its first “Safety in Science Jeopardy” event during the Annual PME Holiday Party on December 10th in ERC 161. This interactive game brought together researchers and students to test their knowledge of laboratory safety practices in an engaging format.

Event Details

The Safety in Science Jeopardy game transformed safety education into an entertaining learning experience. Eight teams, each with 2-4 participants, competed in a Jeopardy-style game focused on scientific safety topics. The game board featured categories related to laboratory safety protocols, emergency procedures, proper handling of hazardous materials, lasers and electronics guidelines, and general safety knowledge. Teams competed for grand prizes, while participation prizes ensured everyone received recognition for their involvement.

Engagement and Impact

One of the notable aspects of the event was the high level of engagement observed both among competing teams and audience members. Even spectators became involved in the game, discussing potential answers and following along with the competition. As the inaugural safety-themed competitive event hosted by JRSI, the Safety Jeopardy game successfully enhanced safety awareness in an accessible format.

Conclusion

The first Safety in Science Jeopardy event represents an important step in JRSI’s mission to foster safety consciousness throughout the UChicago research community. By transforming safety education into an interactive game format, this game was an effective way to engage researchers in safety discussions while building community.

Based on the positive feedback and strong engagement, JRSI plans to consider similar innovative approaches to safety training in future programming. We thank all participants and organizers who contributed to making this event a success.
